I love the different tones, textures and warmth of wood. It’s not the easiest to work into organic free flowing forms by hand but I enjoy the challenge. Carving slowly is very therapeutic, as is being really close to the material.
I’m from London and I make objects out of wood. My practice has evolved over the years, starting with functional tableware and moving towards the more sculptural. My aim is to elevate everyday, often mundane objects, making them beautiful and special.
Everyday in my studio is different but it always starts with a dog walk, coffee and lighting a candle or incense to get in the zone. I might spend the day drawing, designing or carving and prepping pieces. Photography is also a big part of my practice and I am trying to get better at it.
“My practice is slow and intentional, working wood into pieces made with purpose. More and more I’m being inspired by coastlines but always by nature. The flowing shapes, textures and forms of the changing seasons are really special.”
I love giving gifts! I usually go overboard and collect various things over the year that I find for a particular person. I love nothing more than a box full of small, meaningful gifts.
For COLFORD, I have made textured walnut brushes with gumati plant fibre bristles. They're really beautiful to hold and display. I worked slowly to achieve a texture that catches the light and also wanted to create something that looks at home both on a shelf or in the hand.
I have just launched a huge project with Made.com where I have designed 3 pieces of furniture. I’m really happy with how they have turned out and love that they show my handwriting through the collection. I love collaborating with others and have another exciting project launching later this year.
Right now I’m working on creating a carved artwork every week for a year - 52 in total. I’m enjoying the process and seeing the evolution of execution and ideas without pressure.
